To make an informed decision, you have to consider a lot of variables, such as cost of attendance, financial aid, student/teacher ratio, academics, student life, and more. These factors will either positively or negatively impact the quality of education that you receive.
Do you want to acquire an online master’s degree in math education, but don’t know what institution you should attend? Well, if you are as ambitious as I was in my late teens, then you want to attend a top school, instead of an average or mediocre one. Fortunately, we have already done the legwork for you. To help you find the right school for your interests and goals, we’ve compiled a list of 2022’s best online master’s in math education programs.

The University at Buffalo, part of the State University of New York system, has over 30,000 learners enrolled across a full selection of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs. It serves conventional and nonconventional learners alike with an array of online degree programs, including a master’s in mathematics education. The 33-credit master’s in math education degree program can be finished online, on campus, or via a blended approach. The degree program centers on grades 1–12 math education and may be finished in two or three semesters. The coursework contains 12 credits of mathematics classes, 12–15 credits of mathematics education classes, six credits of education electives, and a capstone event in the form of a holistic exam, master’s project, or thesis. Online college classes in the degree program cover concepts including teaching AP calculus, problem-solving in mathematics, teaching and learning AP statistics, algebra, geometry, and rational numbers.
Classes are finished via the Blackboard UBlearns LMS. Candidates to the degree program must submit GRE or MAT scores and should have majored in mathematics or finished at least 30 credits of mathematics classes.
Iowa State has an online masters of school mathematics degree program to prepare learners to teach secondary math. The degree program improves knowledge of statistics, calculus, geometry, and algebra and fulfills prerequisites for professional teaching licensure. Iowa State’s school mathematics degree program requires 32 credits and is not currently available entirely online. The blended degree program utilizes AV Adobe Connect software for distance communication and study.
Candidates to the master’s in math education online degree program should have a bachelor’s degree and should have graduated in the top 50% of their college class. Candidates must be certified to teach secondary education and should have at least two years of teaching experience. Iowa State alumni do not pay application fees.
WGU’s online masters of arts (MA) in teaching mathematics can be finished at an accelerated pace. Learners in WGU’s online master’s in math education degree program finish classwork in mathematics learning and teaching and instructional planning and presentation. Classes are delivered entirely online, but the degree program does require in-person teaching observation and student teaching. Learners also finish 12 to 20 weeks of demonstration, which involves mentorship from a teacher and assessment by a supervisor. Candidates must submit all transcripts, pass background checks, and take entrance tests and a skills exam.
Columbus State has an online math education master’s degree; the masters of arts (MA) in teaching math and science readies learners for careers teaching grades 6–12. Classes are delivered asynchronously so that working teachers can receive the degree according to their schedule.
Candidates must submit all undergraduate transcripts and should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Contact admissions for an updated list of endorsed, associated fields. Candidates should have at least a 2.5 GPA, must submit standardized test scores, and must pass an FBI background check. CSU learners must sustain a 3.0 GPA or better, with no more than two grades of C or below in graduate classes. Transfer learners may bring a maximum of nine transfer credits.
UDM’s masters of arts (MA) in the teaching of mathematics is one of the most reasonably priced online masters in math education available for working teachers. For learners earning their master’s, math education online programs deliver tools to teach mathematical subjects effectively. The coursework covers concepts such as research methods, teaching mathematics with manipulatives, and the psychology of mathematics. Learners finish a capstone experience comprising their choice of a research project or a teaching portfolio.
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 and should have finished specific college-level math classes, such as college calculus. UDM allows limited exceptions for learners working toward these prerequisites. Michigan teachers obtain discounted tuition rates.
NSU has an online MS in mathematics education that is perfect for learners planning to work on teaching or administrative roles in mathematics education. The adaptable degree program readies learners to teach middle, secondary, and postsecondary math. Learners earning their master’s in math education online from NSU learn instructional methods to teach calculus, algebra, and geometry.
NSU’s research-based degree program highlights current culminates in education, and classwork covers concepts such as technology in mathematics education. Learners learn to diagnose learning difficulties and apply professional experience in mathematics education. NSU learners finish a teaching experience and a portfolio displaying instructional methods, teaching documentation, and achievements.
NSU learners must sustain a 3.0 GPA or better.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.5 GPA and must submit all transcripts. Prospective learners should check with their state department of education to determine whether NSU’s degree program meets the prerequisites for teaching licensure in their state.
Regent University offers an MEd in K-8 leadership in mathematics education to prepare students to teach secondary math in kindergarten through eighth grade. Regent offers monthly online information sessions about the degree program, which addresses financial aid, tuition, scholarships, and the admissions process. Regent learners pursuing their master’s in math education online finish classwork in areas such as educational leadership in mathematics and technology applications. Learners partake in a professional project involving hands-on teaching experience.
Candidates must submit all previous college transcripts and should have a current teaching license. International learners should review Regent’s transcript evaluation prerequisites. Regent does not require individual statements or essays; candidates finish a holistic admissions form stating their overall career objectives. The admissions process culminates with a 20-minute phone interview. Learners undergo a full FBI background check before participating in practicum experiences.
Drexel has a master’s of science in mathematics learning and teaching. The online master’s in math education contains classwork in proportional and algebraic reasoning, geometry and spatial reasoning, data analysis, and statistical reasoning. Drexel has an ongoing online open house for learners who want to investigate distance learning. Drexel utilizes proven methods to provide future teachers with the tools to communicate mathematical concepts to learners. To meet Drexel’s student teaching prerequisite, learners record themselves instructing and keep an ongoing portfolio of their teaching methods and results.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Drexel may make exceptions to the GPA prerequisite in some instances. Candidates should be certified to teach middle or high school math. Those without licensure should contact admissions directly for possible consideration.
Lesley offers an MEd in mathematics education to train future leaders and curriculum experts. Graduates of this online master’s in math education are prepared to teach grades 1-8. Lesley’s teaching methods utilize the latest educational advancements to deliver solid STEM skills. The degree program couples an in-depth study of mathematics with real-life skills for communicating concepts in a classroom setting. The coursework covers subjects such as operations of arithmetic, number theory, algebra, and geometry. The fully online degree program contains interactive elements such as chat rooms and discussion forums. Learners finish the 33-credit degree program in an accelerated format in eight-week terms.

The fully online math education master’s degree program offers the flexibility professionals need to earn the degree around their teaching schedule. The degree program readies learners for secondary and postsecondary teaching careers and postgraduate study for doctoral degrees.
Candidates should have 23 undergraduate math credits with grades of C or better, including calculus, applied statistics, and foundations of mathematics. NAU also recommends that candidates have finished classwork in modern geometry, abstract algebra, and analysis. Candidates must submit three letters of reference, an essay, and undergraduate or transfer transcripts.
