7 Active Icebreakers to Get Your Students Up and Moving

1. Human Knot: This icebreaker is a fun way to encourage teamwork and communication. Instruct your students to stand in a circle and have them reach out with their right hand to grab someone else’s hand across the circle. Then, they reach out with their left hand to another person’s hand. The challenge is for them to untangle themselves without letting go of each other’s hands.

2. Circle of Friends: Divide the students into smaller groups and have each group form a circle. Give them a ball and explain that they need to pass it around the circle as quickly as possible, without using their hands. They can use any other body part to pass the ball. The group that finishes passing the ball first wins.

3. Four Corners: Label each corner of the room with a different number or color. Play some upbeat music and instruct the students to walk or dance around the room. When the music stops, they have to quickly choose a corner to stand in. Randomly select a number or color and announce it. All the students standing in that corner are out. Continue until there is only one student left.

4. Charades Relay: Write down various activities, objects, or animals on small pieces of paper and put them in a bowl. Divide the students into teams and have them line up. The first person from each team takes a paper from the bowl and acts it out without talking. Once their team guesses correctly, the next person in line goes. The team that finishes guessing all the words first wins.

5. Exercise Race: Set up a relay race where each team has to complete different exercise stations. Assign a specific exercise for each station, such as jumping jacks, squats, push-ups, or lunges. The first team to complete all the stations and cross the finish line wins.

6. Memory Game: Place various objects on a table and give the students a few moments to study them. Then, cover the objects and ask the students to write down as many objects as they can remember. The student with the most correct answers wins.

7. Simon Says Fitness: Play a game of Simon Says using fitness exercises. Give commands like “Simon says do five jumping jacks” or “Simon says do ten seconds of high knees.” If students perform an exercise without the “Simon says” command, they’re out. The last student remaining wins.

These icebreakers will not only get your students up and moving but also foster a positive and engaging classroom environment. Enjoy the energy and laughter that these activities bring to your class!
