Father’s Day, on the other hand, is a much younger holiday. It was first celebrated in the United States in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran, and a single parent who raised six children. In 1910, the first Father’s Day was officially celebrated in Spokane. The idea spread gradually, and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making Father’s Day a permanent national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
Both of these holidays have origins rooted in love, appreciation, and gratitude towards our parents. The purpose of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is to celebrate, appreciate and honor the mothers and fathers we have in our lives. However, the two holidays have slightly different meanings. Mother’s Day is typically a day to honor and thank mothers for their unconditional love and care.
