Bloomberg Philanthropies Invests $600M in Black Medical Schools

Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced a historic $600 million investment in four historically Black medical schools (HBCUs) – Morehouse School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Howard University College of Medicine. This unprecedented commitment aims to address the systemic inequities in healthcare by supporting research, education, and clinical care at these critical institutions.

The funding will be distributed over the next 10 years, with a focus on strengthening HBCU medical schools‘ infrastructure, expanding their research capabilities, and increasing their capacity to train future generations of diverse physicians. This investment comes at a crucial time, as the United States faces a growing shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in underserved communities.

“We know that when it comes to healthcare, there are tremendous disparities that we must address,” said Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies. “Investing in these historically Black medical schools is a critical step towards achieving greater equity and justice in the healthcare system.”

The investment will have a profound impact on the institutions themselves and the communities they serve. By strengthening these HBCUs, Bloomberg Philanthropies aims to create a more diverse and equitable healthcare workforce, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all Americans.
