The institution was founded by Methodist missionaries working to prepare freed slaves to become American citizens. Today the college is the oldest historically black institution in South Carolina, and the institution maintains its affiliation with the Methodist Church. Claflin has an impressive 14 to 1 student-faculty ratio, and the curriculum is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences.
