This Saturday, Eastern Washington University (EWU) will confer degrees to hundreds of students, but for one student, the accomplishment is especially sweet. Sarah Johnson, a single mother of two, will be walking across the stage to receive her diploma, thanks in large part to the support programs offered by EWU.
Sarah’s journey to graduation was not an easy one. As a single mother, she faced numerous challenges, from balancing childcare responsibilities to managing her coursework. However, with the help of EWU’s support programs, she was able to stay on track and achieve her academic goals.
One of the key programs that helped Sarah was the university’s Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program. This program provides childcare subsidies to eligible student parents, allowing them to focus on their studies while knowing their children are being well cared for. For Sarah, this program was a lifeline, enabling her to attend classes and study sessions without worrying about her children’s care.
In addition to CCAMPIS, Sarah also credits EWU’s Single Parent Support Group with helping her stay motivated and connected to campus resources. This group, which meets regularly, provides a safe space for single parents to share their experiences, receive support, and connect with others who are facing similar challenges.
Sarah is quick to acknowledge the impact these programs have had on her academic success. “Without the support of CCAMPIS and the Single Parent Support Group, I don’t know if I would have made it,” she said. “They helped me stay focused and motivated, even when things got tough.”
As Sarah prepares to graduate, she is grateful for the opportunities she has had at EWU. She plans to pursue a career in social work, where she can help others who are facing similar challenges. Her story is a testament to the power of support programs in helping students overcome obstacles and achieve their academic goals. Congratulations, Sarah, on your well-deserved graduation!
