Tallahassee, FL – Bethune-Cookman University (BCU), Florida’s only historically Black university, has announced the appointment of Dr. Hiram Powell as Interim President. Powell, a veteran educator and administrator with over 30 years of experience, will assume the role effective immediately following the resignation of former President Dr. Vincent Price.
“Dr. Powell is a proven leader with a deep understanding of higher education and a strong commitment to BCU’s mission,” said Dr. E.K. Bonner, chair of the BCU Board of Trustees. “We are confident that he will provide the stability and guidance necessary to navigate this transitional period.”
Powell holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama and has served in various leadership roles at BCU since 2013, most recently as Provost and Chief Academic Officer. He is widely respected for his commitment to academic excellence, student success, and community engagement.
“I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with this important responsibility,” said Powell. “BCU holds a special place in my heart, and I am dedicated to ensuring that our institution continues to thrive. We will work together to address the challenges ahead and build upon the legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.”
Powell’s appointment comes at a critical time for BCU, which has faced financial difficulties in recent years. He will be tasked with addressing these challenges, stabilizing the university’s finances, and charting a path for future growth. The Board of Trustees has indicated that a national search for a permanent president will begin soon.
As Interim President, Powell brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of BCU’s unique history and mission. His appointment is viewed as a sign of continuity and stability during this time of transition for the university.
