Goals for Second Grade: Transitional Reading and Writing

In second grade, students are expected to transition from reading and writing primarily for fun to doing so for academic purposes. Goals for second grade include:

-Reading for comprehension and understanding texts

-Writing for purpose and accuracy

-Developing a strong writing foundation

While these are general goals, each student will develop at a different pace, so it is important to allow for individual variation. It is also important to keep in mind that not all students will reach the same level of proficiency in reading and writing by the end of second grade. However, by taking the time to develop foundational skills, students will be in a better position to tackle more complex texts and achieve their academic goals.
