Gomez Named Provost & VP for Academic Affairs at Cal Poly Pomona

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) has announced the appointment of Dr. Cristina Gomez as its new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The university’s president, Soraya M. Coley, made the announcement earlier this week, citing Dr. Gomez’s impressive academic credentials and leadership experience as key factors in her selection.

Dr. Gomez, who assumes her new role effective immediately, brings a wealth of experience to Cal Poly Pomona. Most recently, she served as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), where she oversaw a diverse range of academic programs and initiatives. Prior to her tenure at CSULA, Dr. Gomez held various leadership positions at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), including Associate Dean of the Graduate Division and Chair of the Chicana/o Studies Department.

As Provost and VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Gomez will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to the university’s academic programs, faculty, and staff. Her priorities will include promoting academic excellence, fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion, and advancing student success initiatives. Dr. Gomez will also play a key role in shaping the university’s academic vision and goals, working closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that Cal Poly Pomona remains a leader in polytechnic education.

President Coley praised Dr. Gomez’s appointment, stating, “Dr. Gomez is an exceptional leader with a deep understanding of the complexities of higher education. Her commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and student success aligns perfectly with our university’s values and goals.
