This group will investigate recent troubling academic research and policy reports which have suggested a correlation between disciplinary issues in school and a student’s later dealings with either the juvenile or the criminal justice system. We will discuss various practices and educational policies that could influence the number of young people who will be remanded to secure correctional institutions. The group will analyze policies and procedures at all school levels that can impact young people’s success in education and disciplinary environments. We will further consider the marked trend towards children of color and those with behavioral challenges being more significantly affected.
