Helping Children With Special Needs Transition to Kindergarten

For children with special needs, transitioning to kindergarten can be a challenge, but there are a few things you can do to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Be flexible. Many special needs children require a different approach to learning. Be prepared to adjust your curriculum to fit their needs.

Be patient. Special needs children can take a little longer to adjust to a school than other students. Be patient and be prepared to work with them to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Help them make friends. Special needs children can be difficult to get along with. You can help them make friends with other students. This will help you support and help guide your special needs child through the transition.

Be supportive.  Special needs children need help to adjust to school, but they also need your support. Be available to help your child with homework, transportation, and any other needs that may be necessary.

Be aware of your surroundings. Special needs children may have unique needs that you should be aware of. Be prepared to take notice of their needs and help them adjust to their new school.

Be open to change. Special needs children can be unpredictable and emotional. Be prepared to adjust your parenting methods to fit the needs of your special needs child.

Be grateful for the opportunity to experience kindergarten. Special needs children learn and grow at a slower pace than other students. Be grateful for the opportunity to experience this new school and help guide your special needs child through the transition.
