How to Make Playdough

Are you looking for a play dough recipe? Well, you have come to the right place. We have an amazing playdough recipe that we think you will love. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Ingredients for Playdough:

  • All-purpose flour – 2 cups
  • Salt – 3/4 cup
  • Cream of tartar – 4 teaspoons
  • Lukewarm water – 2 cups
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Food coloring is optional
  • Quart sized bags

Stir in the flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a huge pot. Now, add the water and oil. If you’re making one color, add in color now as well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough thickens and forms into a ball. Remove from heat and place inside a gallon-sized bag or onto wax paper. Allow it to cool slightly, and then knead until it is smooth. If you’re adding colors to your playdough, divide the dough into balls and then add the dough into the quart-sized bags. Begin with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it. Knead the dough inside the bag, so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together, you’re ready to PLAY.

Store the play dough inside the bags once done to keep it soft. Keeps for up to three months.

Once the dough is completed, I like to put each dough ball into its own quart-sized zip-top bag. Then I let my children smash the colors altogether. It gives the children something to do, makes it, so their hands aren’t stained, and gives the dough home. We use the bag to store the dough when the children are done playing with it. If you plan on making one color, just place the food coloring into the pan when you add the water. My kids can never decide on just one color, so we must divide it.
