Renewal of Teaching Certification
Once you obtain your Initial Teaching License in Kansas, it is good for two years. During that time, you have to complete the state’s Induction and Mentoring Program, usually finished at the Kansas school in which you teach. This has to be verified by your school administrator on the Application for Kansas Upgrade to a Professional License. Additionally, you have to undergo another criminal history background check at this time.
When you obtain your Professional Teaching License, it is good for 5 years. Renewal requires you to complete PD/continuing education during that period, fulfilling one of the following conditions:
- If you do not possess a graduate degree: earn 160 PD points by a sanctioned local development council under an individual PD plan, with at least 80 points consisting of college credit
- If you possess a graduate degree: earn 120 PD points by a sanctioned local development council under an individual PD plan.
If you seek another endorsement on your license, eight credit hours of the program you are preparing for this endorsement can be applied to your renewal credits.
Teaching Certification Reinstatement
If your Kansas teaching license has lapsed and you live in Kansas, call the Licensure Review Committee at 785-296-2280 to set up an individual PD plan. Suppose you worked in an out-of-state school under a good license/license for at least 3 of the past 6 years and have achieved a professional level license in that state. In that case, you can be eligible for immediate renewal of your lapsed Kansas license.
