How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in Louisiana

Your Level 1 Professional Teaching License can be renewed once after its first 3-year period. To move to Level 2, you have to complete 3 years of Louisiana teaching experience in your licensure area and have 3 years of positive evaluations by your school district. You have to also pass the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program.

Once you possess a Level 2 or Level 3 Professional Teaching License, you have to complete 150 hours (CLU) of PD during the 5 years between license renewals. You can earn one CLU for each clock hour of active engagement in a district- or system-sanctioned PD activity.

You can use pages 4-7 of this form to renew your Louisiana teaching license. Include renewal fees, copies of transcripts and assessments scores as necessary, finished Professional Conduct form, and CLU info and documentation. Send your materials to the Louisiana Department of Education, Attention: Certification, P. O. Box 94064, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9064.

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

Suppose you have a period of 5 consecutive school years in which you served as an educator of record for at least 90 consecutive days. In that case, your Louisiana teaching license is considered to have lapsed. To have your license reinstated, you must prove that you have finished 6 sanctioned credit hours of coursework. Before your license is reinstated, you have to file using the renewal form, pay the reinstatement fee, and provide official college transcript(s) proving you have finished these courses.
