Renewal of Teaching Certification
Once you earn your Provisional License, it is good for two years. In your first year of teaching, you are expected to complete the Provisional Teacher Program or another state-sanctioned induction program of training offered via the district in which you are employed. This includes 30 weeks of mentoring by a senior teacher and 3 evaluations. Provisional licenses can be renewed as many as two times. When you successfully complete all of the conditions, the administrator of your employing school will recommend you for Standard Certification and file the paperwork on your behalf.
When you obtain your Standard License, it is considered permanent and does not have to be renewed. You have to, however, continue to meet expected professional standards. A guide to these standards can be found here.
It is up to the district to review the credentials of PD providers, as the NJ DOEno longer registers them. You will work with your school to develop a PD Plan (PDP) tailored to your needs.
Teaching Certification Reinstatement
If you do not take care of your renewal conditions before the expiration of your contract of employment, your license can be suspended for a period of up to one year. If your teaching license is suspended for any reason, it is up to the Board of Assessmentsiners to make the decision to reinstate it.
You have to meet all conditions set forth by the Board of Assessmentsiners at the start of your suspension before any license will be considered for reinstatement. Under certain conditions, you can be asked to file for a new teaching license instead.
