Invisible wounds: Reality of domestic violence in higher education

The ivory tower, often seen as a sanctuary of knowledge and progress, can also harbor a dark secret: domestic violence. While often hidden behind closed doors, this issue disproportionately affects students, impacting their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being.

Domestic violence can manifest in various ways, from emotional abuse and manipulation to physical assault and stalking. The isolation and stress of higher education can exacerbate these experiences, leaving students feeling trapped and alone.  Furthermore, the stigma associated with domestic violence often prevents victims from seeking help, leading to a cycle of abuse that continues unchecked.

Universities have a crucial role to play in addressing this issue.  Creating safe and supportive environments for students requires:

Raising awareness:  Openly discussing domestic violence and providing clear resources for students and staff.

Offering comprehensive support:  Establishing clear protocols for reporting incidents and providing access to counseling, legal aid, and safe housing options.

Training faculty and staff:  Equipping them with the knowledge and skills to identify signs of abuse and intervene appropriately.

By addressing this invisible wound, higher education institutions can create a campus where students feel safe and empowered to thrive. It’s time to break the silence and ensure that domestic violence is no longer a hidden burden on the path to academic success.
