Kim Wilbanks, the long-serving superintendent of the Jonesboro School District, has announced her plans to retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year. This announcement marks the end of an era for Jonesboro public schools, as Wilbanks has been at the helm of the district since 2007.
Throughout her tenure, Wilbanks has been a driving force behind numerous initiatives and improvements in the district. Her leadership has been characterized by a focus on academic excellence, innovative programs, and community engagement. Under her guidance, the district has implemented Career Academies at Jonesboro High School and Magnet School programs at five elementary schools, enhancing educational opportunities for students across the district.
Wilbanks’ career in education spans several decades, beginning in 1984. Her achievements include receiving the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1991 as a kindergarten teacher and being named Arkansas Superintendent of the Year for the 2013-14 academic year.
One of Wilbanks’ notable accomplishments was leading a successful 3.1-mill campaign in 2010, the first millage increase approval for the district in 22 years. This initiative has been crucial in providing resources for educational improvements and infrastructure development.
As the district prepares for this transition, plans are underway to honor Wilbanks’ contributions and to begin the process of selecting her successor. The Jonesboro School District will undoubtedly seek a leader who can build upon the strong foundation laid during Wilbanks’ tenure.
