Cheyney, PA – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited Cheyney University, the nation’s oldest historically Black college and university (HBCU), today to celebrate the university’s recent investments and underscore his unwavering commitment to supporting HBCUs across the state.
“Cheyney University holds a special place in Pennsylvania’s history and is a testament to the power of education to transform lives,” Governor Shapiro said during his address. “Investing in HBCUs is not just about funding, it’s about recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities they face. We must ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has access to a quality education that opens doors to a brighter future.”
Shapiro highlighted the state’s recent investment in Cheyney’s infrastructure, including a new science building and renovations to existing facilities. The Governor also praised the university’s ongoing efforts to bolster academic programs and support student success.
“These investments are a clear sign of our commitment to Cheyney and all our HBCUs,” Shapiro stated. “They will enable the university to continue its mission of providing high-quality education and preparing students for success in the 21st century.”
The Governor’s visit coincided with the university’s ongoing “Cheyney University 1837 Forward” campaign, a comprehensive fundraising initiative designed to support student scholarships, faculty research, and academic excellence.
During his address, Shapiro also met with students, faculty, and staff, listening to their perspectives on the university’s challenges and opportunities. He emphasized his administration’s dedication to working collaboratively with HBCUs to ensure their continued success.
“We need to work together to ensure that all our students, especially those at HBCUs, have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive,” Shapiro concluded. “The future of Pennsylvania depends on it.”
Shapiro’s visit to Cheyney is seen as a significant step towards solidifying the state’s commitment to HBCUs. The Governor’s remarks and the state’s financial support demonstrate a renewed focus on promoting equity and access to quality education for all Pennsylvanians.
