Kelly calls tuition hikes ‘necessary’ as work continues to keep higher education ‘affordable’

Amidst growing concerns about the rising cost of college, Chancellor Kelly defended recent tuition increases, emphasizing their necessity in maintaining the quality and accessibility of higher education.

“While no one wants to see tuition go up, it’s important to understand that these increases are driven by factors beyond our control,” Chancellor Kelly stated during a press conference. “Rising operating costs, inflation, and the need to invest in critical areas like faculty salaries and research infrastructure all contribute to the need for adjustments.”

Kelly acknowledged the burden these increases place on students and families, emphasizing the University’s commitment to providing financial aid and affordability initiatives. “We are acutely aware of the financial challenges facing our students,” she stated. “That’s why we are expanding scholarship opportunities, increasing work-study programs, and exploring innovative ways to make college more affordable, such as offering free tuition for low-income students.”

The Chancellor highlighted the university’s continued commitment to academic excellence and student success, emphasizing that the investment in resources will ultimately lead to a better educational experience for all students. “We believe that a strong and vibrant university is essential to the future of our community and our nation. This investment in higher education is an investment in our future.”

While acknowledging the need for continued dialogue and collaboration, Chancellor Kelly expressed confidence that the University is taking necessary steps to address the affordability challenges while upholding its commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students.
