What can be done at home to help encourage literacy?
Although reading and writing are taught in schools, these skills must be encouraged and practiced daily. It is essential to teach kids an enthusiasm for reading and writing. Luckily, there are things you can do at home to help foster this love of literacy.
Read to your children. If you do nothing else, read to your children. Read often and on a variety of topics. Reading not only helps to spark their interest in language, but it also exposes them to new vocabulary, new topics, and helps them learn the flow of communication.
Let children help you cook and bake. This is the perfect opportunity to let them help you read the recipe. Not only are they practicing reading, but they will be working on their math skills too.
Encourage them to write the grocery list. This task is fun and gives them a chance to practice writing, and then reading what they wrote at the store. Do not worry if they can’t spell all the words. In fact, this is a great time to encourage them to sound it out. Ask them what sounds they hear in the word. This is teaching them to be independent readers.
