Mercury Planet Facts for Kids

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and is closest to the sun. It was named after the Roman messenger, Mercury, who was known for his speed and agility. In this article, we will learn about some interesting Mercury planet facts for kids!

1. Size and Distance: As mentioned earlier, Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system with a diameter of 4,880 kilometers. It is also located closest to the sun, with a distance of approximately 77 million kilometers from it.

2. Surface: Mercury has a heavily cratered surface with high cliffs and steep slopes. It also has some of the largest impact craters in our solar system, with the Caloris Basin being the largest. The surface temperature of Mercury varies drastically, with the side facing the sun being extremely hot (up to 427°C) and the side facing away from the sun being extremely cold (as low as -173°C).

3. Atmosphere: Mercury has a very thin atmosphere, which consists mostly of sodium and potassium. Due to its close proximity to the sun, any gases that may exist on the planet get blasted away by the solar winds.

4. Rotation: Unlike other planets in our solar system, Mercury rotates very slowly on its axis. It takes approximately 59 Earth days for Mercury to complete one rotation around its own axis, but only 88 Earth days to orbit the sun.

5. No Moons: Mercury does not have any moons or natural satellites like other planets in our solar system.

6. Exploration: Mercury has been explored by only two spacecraft, NASA’s Mariner 10 in 1974 and 1975, and NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, which orbited Mercury from 2011 to 2015. The MESSENGER spacecraft provided detailed information about the planet’s surface, magnetic field, and atmosphere.
