One year on from 7 October, it is time for universities to act on antisemitism

It has been a year since the shocking events of 7 October 2022, when a series of antisemitic incidents rocked universities across the UK. From hateful chants to the display of Nazi flags, the day brought into sharp focus the ongoing problem of antisemitism on campus.  While some institutions have taken commendable steps towards addressing the issue, a year later, the situation demands more than just statements of condemnation.  Concrete action is urgently needed.

Universities have a crucial responsibility to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students. This includes tackling antisemitism in all its forms – from subtle microaggressions to overt displays of hatred.  This requires more than just reactive measures; it demands a proactive and comprehensive strategy. Universities must:

Develop robust antisemitism education programmes: Integrating antisemitism education into curricula and student training is vital to raise awareness and challenge prejudice. This should encompass the history of antisemitism, its contemporary manifestations, and the impact of antisemitic language and behaviour.

Invest in dedicated support services: Establishing robust support systems for Jewish students facing antisemitism is crucial. These services should be easily accessible and offer confidential counselling, advocacy, and reporting mechanisms.

Implement strong disciplinary measures: Universities must demonstrate a zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism. This includes clear disciplinary procedures for incidents of antisemitic harassment, intimidation, and discrimination.

Promote open dialogue and engagement:  Creating platforms for open dialogue between Jewish students, staff, and the wider university community can foster understanding and build trust. This can involve student-led initiatives, faculty-led discussions, and guest lectures by experts on antisemitism.

One year on, the memories of 7 October serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. Universities must go beyond lip service and commit to real change.  By implementing these steps, they can create a more inclusive and tolerant environment for all, ensuring that the shameful events of last year never happen again.
