Record-high 117m people displaced worldwide in 2023, UNHCR says

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has released a staggering report, revealing that a record-high 117 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced from their homes in 2023. This marks a significant increase from the previous year, with the number of displaced individuals rising by over 10 million.

The UNHCR’s annual Global Trends report highlights the devastating impact of conflicts, persecution, and natural disasters on communities around the world. The agency’s data shows that one in every 77 people globally has been forced to flee their homes, with the majority being women and children.

The report attributes the surge in displacement to ongoing conflicts in countries such as Ukraine, Syria, and Yemen, as well as the growing number of climate-related disasters. The war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, has led to the largest displacement crisis in Europe since World War II, with over 5 million people forced to flee their homes.

Meanwhile, the situation in Syria remains dire, with over 13 million people displaced internally or externally since the start of the conflict in 2011. The crisis in Yemen has also worsened, with over 4 million people displaced due to the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis.

The report also highlights the growing impact of climate change on displacement, with natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods forcing people to flee their homes. The UNHCR estimates that climate-related disasters displaced over 14 million people in 2022 alone.

The UNHCR is calling on governments and international organizations to increase their support for refugees and displaced people, providing them with access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. The agency is also urging countries to address the root causes of displacement, including conflict, persecution, and climate change.

As the number of displaced people continues to rise, it is imperative that the international community comes together to provide aid and support to those affected. The UNHCR’s report serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict and climate change, and the need for collective action to address these pressing global issues.
