The research was limited to violent and non-violent crimes identified in the Clery Act.
Based on our analysis, here are some of the safest HBCU colleges:
1. Spelman College – Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Spelman College is a private, liberal arts institution for women. The college reported zero incidents of violent crimes on campus in both 2018 and 2019. There was only one case of a non-violent crime in 2018.
2. Howard University – A private research university in Washington D.C., Howard University is the only HBCU with a law school, medical school, and dental school. The university had 21 reported crimes in 2018, of which only one incident was violent. In 2019, the campus had only nine reported crimes, all of which were non-violent.
3. Winston-Salem State University – A public institution in North Carolina, Winston-Salem State University offers more than 40 undergraduate programs. The university had only two reported crimes in 2018, both of which were non-violent. In 2019, no campus crimes were reported.
4. Claflin University – Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Claflin University is a private institution established in 1869. In 2018, the university had only one reported crime. No crimes were reported on campus in 2019.
5. Virginia State University – A public institution in Petersburg, Virginia, Virginia State University offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university reported only one violent crime on campus in 2019, and there were no incidents of non-violent crimes.
