Shoreline School District has taken a bold step in reimagining the learning environment with its innovative “Forest Classrooms” initiative. This program, which officially launched today, integrates outdoor education into the core curriculum for elementary and middle school students.

The initiative transforms local forested areas into fully equipped outdoor learning spaces, complete with weather-resistant technology and flexible seating arrangements. Students will spend at least one full day per week in these forest classrooms, engaging in hands-on learning across various subjects, from science and math to literature and art.

Dr. Emily Chen, the district’s Director of Curriculum, explained the rationale behind the program: “Research consistently shows the benefits of nature-based learning on cognitive development, mental health, and environmental awareness. Our Forest Classrooms bring these benefits directly into our everyday educational practices.”

The program has garnered support from local environmental groups and tech companies, who have provided funding for equipment and helped develop specialized outdoor-friendly educational technology. As climate change continues to be a pressing issue, educators hope this initiative will foster a deeper connection between students and the natural world, inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
