Special Topic / The Case Against Percentage Grades

There are many people who believe that percent grades are not a fair way to evaluate a student’s academic progress. They argue that percentage grades do not accurately reflect a student’s true level of mastery of the material. One of the main reasons people believe this is that a student’s grade on a test can be dramatically impacted by factors such as how well they have studied for the test and whether they have made any errors on the test.

Percent grades can also be unfair to students who do well on a test but receive a lower percentage grade because they are not the best students in their class. For example, a student who gets a 90% on a test but is in a class with students who only get 85% grades would earn a lower grade than a student who gets a 95% on the same test but is in a class with students who get a 99% average grade.

Other students believe that percentage grades are a better way to evaluate a student’s academic progress because they believe that it is easier to gauge a student’s level of mastery when their grades are based on a percentage of the total course grade. This is because a student’s grade on a test is not as impacted by factors such as how well they have studied for the test and whether they have made any errors on the test.
