Teaching in Texas: How to Obtain Certification

Texas is one of the largest and most populous states in the union. Which means it needs a lot of teachers to educate its children. Did I mention that the pay isn’t bad? Its teachers made an average of $53,167 during the 2017-2018 school year, which means it pays better than about 45% of U.S. states. Are you interested in becoming a teacher in the state of Texas? Here is what you will need to do to receive PreK-12 certification.

  1. Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree – Obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Complete an Educator Preparation Program – You must graduate from an Approved Educator Preparation Program. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to become a teacher, you must complete an Alternative Certification Program or Post Baccalaureate program.
  3. Pass Certification Exams – You must pass your teacher certification exams. You may be asked to verify this information.
  4. Submit a State Application – Once all requirements are met, you can apply for certification. Do not apply unless you have verified that you are eligible. Please contact your teacher education program to confirm.
  5. Complete Fingerprinting – If you are a first-time applicant, you must be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check.
