Teaching Students About Boogey

The boogeyman, or boogey, is a mythical creature that has been a part of many cultures and childhood stories for generations. It’s a creature that is often associated with fear and nightmares, which may make some educators hesitant to introduce the concept into their lesson plans. However, teaching students about the boogeyman can provide a great opportunity to explore cultural differences, discuss fears and anxieties and help students explore the concept of bravery.

One way to introduce the boogeyman in a classroom is by starting with a story or legend from a different culture. This provides an opportunity to teach about different cultures and their unique beliefs. Whether it’s learning about Baba Yaga from Russian folklore or the monster under the bed from Western culture, there is a wide range of stories to choose from.

Once students have had an opportunity to learn about the different boogeymen that exist in different cultures, it’s time to discuss why we are afraid of them. This is where the topic can get a bit deeper, providing an opportunity to explore anxieties and fears. Students can reflect on what scares them and why, and discuss ways to cope with those anxieties, from talking to trusted adults to using visualization techniques.

Teaching about the boogeyman can also be an opportunity to talk about bravery and facing fears. Students can learn how to stay calm and rational during moments of panic, and can learn strategies for overcoming fears, such as deep breathing, problem solving or visualization. They can also learn about the concept of courage and how it enables us to face difficult situations and take risks.

In conclusion, the boogeyman may be a mythological creature that terrifies children, but it can also be a great teaching tool to help students explore different cultures, understand their own fears and anxieties, and develop bravery and courage. As educators, we can foster a safe, supportive learning environment for our students to explore this topic, and help them to navigate their fears and anxieties in a healthy and productive manner.
