As educators, one of the greatest privileges we have is teaching our students about the mysteries of the universe. One of the most fascinating phenomena we have in our universe is the collection of galaxies.
Galaxies are truly massive structures comprised of billions of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter, all swirling together in a vast cosmic ocean. 1. Andromeda Galaxy – also known as M31, this galaxy is named after the constellation Andromeda and is the closest galaxy to our Milky Way
2. Sombrero Galaxy – this galaxy gets its name from its unique, wide-brimmed shape which resembles a sombrero hat
3. Whirlpool Galaxy – also known as M51, this spiral galaxy received its name due to the swirling shape of its spiral arms
4. Pinwheel Galaxy – named after its striking spiral shape, this galaxy is also known as M101
5. Tadpole Galaxy – this galaxy has a unique shape which resembles a tadpole with an elongated tail, hence its creative name.
Learning about famous galaxy names can be a great way to engage and inspire young scientists. We can encourage our students to learn more about the different types of galaxies, their ages, and sizes. We could explore the fascinating histories of these great cosmic structures, from their formation billions of years ago, to the unique characteristics that make them stand out from others of their kind.
