As a student at UNC, he played on the freshman team in 1968-1969 and acted as an assistant coach under Dean Smith from 1978 to 1988.

Williams’ coaching career began when he took over the position of head coach for the University of Kansas Jayhawks in 1988. Under his guidance, the Jayhawks reached four Final Fours and won nine conference titles during his tenure from 1988 to 2003.
In 2003, Williams returned to his alma mater as head coach at the University of North Carolina. His impact on the Tar Heels program was tremendous – they secured three NCAA championships (in 2005, 2009, and 2017), reached several Final Fours, and won numerous conference titles.
