Wynn Rosser to follow UNT’s Keller as head of Texas higher education board

In a significant leadership transition within Texas’s educational landscape, Wynn Rosser has been appointed as the new head of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), succeeding the University of North Texas’ Dr. Neal Smatresk, who stepped down after a fruitful tenure. Rosser, currently the president and CEO of the Greater Texas Foundation, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role, which is instrumental in shaping the future of higher education in the Lone Star State.

As Texas faces growing challenges in higher education, including enrollment declines, equity gaps, and the urgent need for workforce alignment, Rosser’s appointment comes at a crucial time. With a deep commitment to improving educational access and outcomes, Rosser is expected to advocate for innovative policies that enhance the educational experience for all Texans. His previous work with the Greater Texas Foundation has equipped him with an understanding of the barriers many students face, especially in underserved communities.

Rosser’s background in higher education policy and funding will be invaluable as he collaborates with institutions statewide to improve graduation rates and promote STEM education and workforce development. His vision includes fostering partnerships between higher education institutions and local industries to ensure that graduates are well-prepared for today’s job market.

His predecessor, Dr. Smatresk, has left a legacy of progress and innovation during his leadership. Rosser will aim to build on this foundation, working closely with key stakeholders, including university leaders, policymakers, and community organizations.

As the state of Texas continues to evolve, Rosser’s leadership will be pivotal in steering the THECB towards a future that ensures quality education is accessible to all Texans, bolstering the state’s reputation as a leader in higher education. The coming months will undoubtedly reveal Rosser’s strategies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational framework across Texas.
