Introduction:
The Abilene Independent School District (AISD) is experiencing a significant increase in the number of multilingual students. This trend reflects the growing diversity within the community and the district’s efforts to accommodate and support students from various linguistic backgrounds.
For the 2024-25 school year, AISD has enrolled over 1,200 students in its English as a Second Language (ESL) program, marking the highest number to date. Cooper High School, in particular, has one of the largest populations of multilingual students. Nsengiyumva Leopold, an ESL interpreter at Cooper High, shared his experiences of helping students overcome language barriers, drawing from his own journey as a former ESL student in Abilene.
The district’s superintendent has emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. AISD is working to expand its ESL programs and hire more multilingual faculty to better serve its diverse student body. Plans are also underway to introduce a Kindergarten Swahili program next school year.
