Description
This group will introduce educators to theories and research that explain why Latinos, of all major social groups in the United States, are the least likely to be enrolled in school and why, as adults, they are the group least likely to have a high school diploma. The group will examine the differences between recent immigrant groups, focusing particularly on research showing the diverse cultural backgrounds within Latino subgroups. The topics the group will cover include how new immigrants assimilate, language and schooling, educational success and perseverance in school, the way race, class, and gender intersect with educational attainment, and finally, transnational communities.
