How To Become an Audiologist

Audiology is a growing field as more people seek out hearing healthcare services. Becoming an audiologist requires a lot of commitment and dedication, but it can be a very rewarding and satisfying career. Here is a guide to help you become an audiologist.

1. Get a Bachelor’s Degree: The first step to becoming an audiologist is to earn a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as speech-language pathology or psychology. You will also need to complete several pre-requisites such as anatomy and physiology, physics, and statistics.

2. Take the GRE: After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE is a standardized test that measures verbal, quantitative and analytical skills. You should plan to take the GRE at least one year before you plan to apply to an audiology program.

3. Apply to Audiology Programs: After taking the GRE, you will need to find and apply to audiology programs. Make sure to research the different programs to ensure they offer the courses and resources you need.

4. Earn a Doctorate of Audiology (AuD): Once accepted into an audiology program, you will need to earn a Doctorate of Audiology (AuD). This typically requires completing a four-year program that includes coursework, clinical training, and a dissertation.

5. Obtain a License: Once you have earned your AuD, you will need to obtain a license in order to practice as an audiologist. Licensing requirements vary by state, but generally include passing an exam and completing a certain number of clinical hours.

6. Stay Up to Date: As an audiologist, it is important to stay up to date on new research, technologies, and treatment options. You should also participate in continuing education courses to stay informed and certified.

Becoming an audiologist requires hard work and dedication, but the rewards are worth it. Once you have earned your license, you will be able to enjoy a career helping people improve their hearing and quality of life.
