My Advice to College Students on Teaching: Do It Anyway

The words of wisdom passed down through generations often echo in our ears, shaping the choices we make and the paths we take. One piece of advice I have always carried with me is, “Do it anyway.” In the context of college students considering a teaching career, this advice is particularly relevant.

College can be an overwhelming time in a person’s life. With countless courses to choose from and various career paths calling your name, settling on one particular trajectory can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, if you feel compelled to teach, I urge you to embrace that calling wholeheartedly.

Now, you might ask yourself, “Why should I choose teaching over other professions?” The answer lies not only in the reward of impacting young lives but also in personal growth. Here are some reasons why teaching is worth pursuing despite any perceived obstacles or uncertainties:

1. Personal Satisfaction: There is immense personal satisfaction in seeing your students grow intellectually and emotionally under your guidance. Knowing that you are instrumental in shaping their future brings a level of happiness and contentment few other professions can match.

2. Knowledge Mastery: Teaching demands that you stay up-to-date with your subject matter and continuously hone your craft. Consequently, as an educator, you give yourself the opportunity to master your chosen field while passing on knowledge to eager students.

3. Transferable Skills: The skills acquired through teaching are widely applicable across multiple industries. Educational methodologies such as critical thinking development, problem-solving techniques, and effective communication make successful educators an asset to any organization.

4. Networking and Collaboration: Teachers often work together in teams to improve curricula, teaching methods, or manage administrative tasks. This teamwork fosters a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among fellow teachers which strengthens bonds beyond the workplace.

5. Job Security: Education is a cornerstone of human society. While other industries experience fluctuations based on market conditions or technological advancements, the role of teachers remains a constant in virtually every community.

It’s no secret that every career, including teaching, has its challenges. Teachers often cope with limited resources, high expectations to produce results, and long hours spent grading or planning lessons. Regardless of these obstacles, I circle back to the advice I received long ago – do it anyway!

Do it because you are fueled by a passion for improving your students’ lives and enriching their minds. Do it because you know that education is integral in shaping the future generations who will become leaders, scientists, artists, and more.

So, if you are a college student contemplating a teaching career but are facing a myriad of challenges or uncertainties, remember that the rewards outweigh the difficulties and pursue your calling with conviction. Your impact on students’ lives will be one of your most profound contributions to society – make it count and do it anyway!
