Sacramento State Creates Native American College

Sacramento State University has made history by establishing the first Native American College within the California State University system. This groundbreaking initiative, officially launched in September 2023, signifies a commitment to honoring Indigenous traditions and fostering academic excellence for Native American students.

The new college will serve as a dedicated hub for Native American students, offering a range of resources, support services, and academic programs. It will be a space for cultural immersion, community building, and empowerment.

“The creation of the Native American College is a monumental step towards ensuring that Native American students at Sacramento State have the resources and support they need to thrive,” said President Robert S. Nelsen. “This dedicated space will empower our students to connect with their cultural heritage, pursue their academic goals, and become leaders in their communities.”

The college will offer a robust academic curriculum, incorporating Indigenous perspectives across disciplines, including Native American history, language, and cultural studies. It will also provide specialized academic advising, mentoring programs, and financial aid opportunities tailored to the unique needs of Native American students.

Furthermore, the college will serve as a platform for community engagement and collaboration. It will host cultural events, workshops, and conferences that celebrate Indigenous traditions, promote cultural understanding, and foster partnerships with local Native American communities.

It signals a commitment to recognizing the rich contributions of Indigenous peoples and fostering their continued success. This landmark initiative serves as a model for other institutions seeking to create culturally relevant and empowering learning environments for Native American students.
